The Town of Leonardtown’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a meeting today, March 20th at 4pm. You can attend in person at the Town Hall Building or watch online on the Town’s YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@TownofLeonardtown/streams

The Commission’s will review the final site plan and architectural approval of the proposed St. Mary’s Assisted Living and Memory Care Facility. The facility will be located at the corner of St. Andrew’s Church Road and Route 5, on approximately 30 acres of land, though it will not cover the entire acreage.

I was not able to find planning documents as the Town does not have Planning and Zoning information available on its BoardDocs website. However, I have provided a photo of the proposed site below. This screenshot was taken from the annexation documents when the Town annexed this land in early 2021.

St. Mary’s Assisted Living and Memory Care (SMALMC) is a non-profit LLC, and their ownership also owns St. Mary’s Nursing Center. According to the Articles of Organization for SMALMC, the company will “meet the medical, housing, and social needs of elderly and disabled persons, and provide elderly and disabled persons with life care services [like] food, shelter, security, skilled nursing and medical care (including long-term nursing care), necessary housekeeping services, recreational and educational facilities and transportation.

Currently, there is a lack of memory care facilities in St. Mary’s County, and even the Nursing Center has a limited capacity. This new location is much needed to continue to expand healthcare services available in our area.

What are your thoughts on this development?
